Mitsubishi WD-73838 Product Review by Epiphanyx

I initially bought a Vizio xvt553sv and it was bright and delightful so I was totally delighted by my purchase aside from the cheap remote and the cheap frame on the set. I bought that set due to the great reviews, the cnet award and the point that I didn’t worry about 3d as well as LCD and Plasma dominate the market presently which is all that anybody mentions. Exhausted at some point, I looked at some reviews of 3d tvs and home 3d in general in AVS forums and before performing research I realized the latest 3d tvs and the technology they employ being far too new and too gimmicky. Well, I steadily begun to want 3d according to impressions I was reading. Once I tried to get the best overall 3d tv all I noticed was LCD and Plasma – again. That’s till I read about Mitsubishi’s DLP – how they’re less costly, larger, and create enhanced 3D than LCD and Plasma. “What?” I assumed, “They still make DLP sets?”. Yes; and unsurprisingly mitsubishi may be the only manufacturer that still does so. I have been thinking that DLPs should be such as the old rear projection screens I had seen on several events issue – beaten up, awful viewing direction, grainy picture – ordinary blah; especially as compared to today’s super bright LCDs and Plasmas.

Well I continued reading and discovered that the brightness on DLP can be compared and the viewing direction, although not 180 degree awesome, is certainly not bad on the latest DLPs. I noticed that I may get a MUCH bigger screen at a lower price PLUS 3D with a DLP tv… AND it wouldn’t get dimmer and dimmer year after year till the picture is horrible but instead only need a new bulb for a very affordable cost a several years later on ( I want to bear this thing as long as feasible) AND if one of my kids in some way smashes the screen it isn’t really GAME OVER but instead a new screen that is also pretty cheap.

So I returned the Vizio and got this 73″ Mitsubishi set + 4 year warranty + 4 3d Glasses + a harmony one remote for only a bit less that what I paid for the VIZIO. I became worried that I would have to just admit obvious compromises in picture quality – boy was I completely wrong. After you get the settings right (use the “bright” power setting) – it appears to be good if not better than the VIZIO – and the Vizio was damn good.

Screen size: The 73″ inch screen, while I originally thought it could be almost too big, actually is damn near perfect in reality I almost think I ought to have gone with the 83 – almost. It at fist seemed monsterous in my living room but after a month of viewing it feels like the best way to go – bigger really IS better. It’s absolutely a home theatre. I adore it, the wife loves it, and everybody who comes over believes it’s freaking remarkable.

Deeper cabinet: The depth is not actually a concern – only 10 inches or so deeper than the vizio LCD and I am having a stand and don’t worry about wall mounting either way and no one goes back behind the tv anyhow plus it’s not so deep than you would think a rear projection screen would be. With this 73 inch bohemoth in front of me, I really don’t even care that it includes a little bit more depth to the cabinet.

3D: Magnificent. You want it NOW – yes YOU. Right NOW. I had to spend awhile to get all the components set up for 3d (PS3, Ultra-clear DLP link 3D glasses, 3D material (Crysis 2, Megamind 3D)) but holy crap is it amazing. It seems phenominal and it’s really absolutely worth it RIGHT NOW – I don’t care what anybody else says about it being gimmicky or hold off until they get things standardized, blah blah blah. For 3D games alone it’s worth it, although there’s only a coupld of dozen games out that support 3D. The ones out these days are brilliant and will keep you satisfied for years and more will arrive as 3D catches on – and it will. It completely enhances the immersion of movies and particularly games – it’s like you are searching into a window to a different world – and also for FPS games like Crysis 2, you which you are able to move around in that world at your whim. Truly, it’s one of those things that you just have to see for yourself to totally appreciate.

All in all: Awesome size, picture, price, features (3D!!!), future proof – you can’t go wrong. Here is the end of Mitsubishi WD-73838 Review.
